The Independent Read Write Inc students have been writing and illustrating their own versions of "There's no such thing" by Heidi McKinnon. This has been a large part of term 2's work and we are all very excited about the upcoming launch of their 23 books. Stay tuned for more information. Here is a sneak peek of their book covers.

Ian Boyd, co author of Melody Finch visited rooms 3 & 4 (Mrs Campbell's and Mrs McAskill's class of year 2 & 3's) on Tuesday, June 22nd to talk about his book and it's message of sustainability. The children were very interested in Ian's talk and his friend Biji the bilby.
Year 6 & 7 students were lucky to have Sally Hardy visit our school on June 17th. Sally has years of experience writing plays and was able to share her skills and passion for creating scripts with our senior students. Thank you to Aaliyah, Kamryn and Chelsea for being Sally's ambassadors for the day. Year 6 & 7 students were lucky to have Allayne Webster visit our school on June 15th. Allayne is a well known author of yound adult and children's books. Allayne kindly shared her craft with the students. Thank you to Liam, Gemma and Kobe for being Allayne's ambassadors for the day. The National Simultaneous Storytime reading of “Give me some space” by Dr Shannon Walker watched by students at Ardtornish PS. How exciting to see the book read in zero gravity on the Space Station. The Independent Read, Write Inc students who work with me in the library had fun in the last week of term reading "Flat Stanley" and making their own Stanley to photograph and write an opening chapter for their own story.
Room 18 were the stars at the 2020 PRC assembly this year. The theme was circus with a visit from Jessica from "Circus Elemets" presenting a juggling circus spectacular to open the assembly and room 18 closed the event with their own high energy performance.
99% of students at APS received their PRC certificates or medals and 74 students achieved "Hall of Fame". After months of writing and illustrating, the independent Read Write Inc group of students were able to have a group book launch of their own creations based on Caroline Magerl's "Nop" picture book. Each student used Caroline's wonderful text to inspire their own second-hand toy story. As well as writing and illustrating, they also produced a soft toy to accompany their book.
Everyone had a one on one story reading with their special invited guest and shared a small morning tea. Thank you to Mrs Butler who helped type the stories and prepare the students for the event with invitation writing and public speaking training. "The Jungle Book" play by rooms 19,20,21 (years 2-4) was a great success. The play based on the famous story by Rudyard Kipling ran for 4 performances and was applauded by both parents and students at APS. It was great fun bringing this classic text to life with fellow teachers, Mrs Matthews, Mrs McAskill and Mrs Campbell.
Book Week was a different experience this year but was still fun. The school did not hold its usual big Book Week assembly due to Covid restrictions, the imminent movement of classrooms to new buildings and the "Jungle Book"
play commitments. It was also unusual that Book Week was held in October. Students had been making art based on the Notable and Shortlisted books and the Book Week theme throughout the year. This was placed on display with other art competition entries. All students visited the library to learn about the Book Week winners. Junior primary students had a treasure hunt of Book of the Year, Early Childhood titles to find. Middle and upper students had to find and identify the staff photos that had been transformed into curious creatures. There were fun Kahoot games based on "Curious Creatures" and on Friday, October 23rd there was a "Curious Creatures" dress up day where students were able to come as an unusual creature. Other activities were held during lunchtime such as "Animal Bingo", animal tattoos, how to draw animal videos and colouring in. |
