Book Week was celebrated at Ardtornish Primary School Library with a garden theme. We "Escaped to the Garden" which was fitting as our our school vegetable garden was in the process of being upgraded. Art exhibits, lunch time activities, a treasure hunt and "escape room" type puzzle were part of the fun. As always the Book Week Assembly was a whole school interpretation of escaping to...a place or time each class have chosen. Last term the middle/upper primary students had a Writers’ Festival and learnt valuable writing skills from leading SA authors, Rosanne Hawke and Phil Cummings.
This week the JP students meet several writers and illustrators who came to our school. Janeen Brian, Jane Jolly, Mandy Foot and Andrew Joyner are all South Australian published authors or illustrators. Janeen Brian has produced over 100 titles and Janeen, Jane and Andrew have all been selected as “Notable”, or “Shortlisted” books by the reputable Children’s Book Council of Australia. Mandy is a new and enthusiastic illustrator who has recently began to write books for children as well. Why have these people come to the school? Each author, illustrator is a skilled and successful writer or artist. Their knowledge and insight into their craft is beyond most people’s experiences. They talk about their processes and give students an understanding of the skills they need to make their work better and at times exceptional. Each child is an author or illustrator in their daily lives at school. Teachers strive to make them the best they can be and using experts in their fields is a successful way to push each student’s capabilities. After meeting each author/ illustrator children become inspired by their books and this encourages them to read even more. Who knows, your child might be a future published author or illustrator too. I would like to thank the year 7 students who are “ambassadors” or official hosts/ caretakers of each author/illustrator. The volunteer students make sure each visitor is well cared for and help them get to each class with all the work samples they bring to show the students. All authors and illustrators have been delighted about their treatment. Thank you to Ashlee, Matthew, Hayley, Kyle, Nina, Katey, Dillan and Aliyah for being great representatives of our school. |
