- The students become published picture fiction writers, in an intense writing workshop where they deconstruct a picture fiction book and write their own versions. The book is selected by the group from a current CBCA Notable book. They learn aspects of publishing a story and create the main characters that are incorporated into their book.
- Students wrote instructions for making a wind up penguin (a character from ‘Frank’s Red Hat’ and creating a print (inspired by ‘Dirt by Sea’). They were shown how each piece was made and as a group they created the list of instructions for the penguin and were then able to make the penguin themselves following their instructions. They wrote the printing instructions individually.
- The CBCA Notable books for ‘Children’s Book of the Year Picture Fiction’ and ‘Children’s Book of the Year Early Childhood’ became a focus of their reading. They were discussed as a group and students decided which book they wanted to use as a mentor text for creating their own picture book.
- In 2023 ‘When You’re Older’ was selected as the mentor text.
- Their self published books are extremely popular books to borrow. They love seeing their books catalogued and their names listed in ‘Bookmark” our circulation, cataloguing system.
