- Shadow Judging fulfills all of the English Curriculum aims (as listed above)
- There were 4 groups involved in Shadow Judging this year (compared to 1 group in 2022)
- Val Crozier yr 5- CBCA Book of the Year: Picture Book
- Graeme Wheaton yr 5-CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
- Sharon McAskill/Emma Zarcinas yr3-CBCA Book of the Year: Picture Book
- Cheyenne Kirby yr 5/6-CBCA Book of the Year: Picture Book
- A meeting was called for the teachers involved to learn about Shadow Judging and to organise SJ booklets etc.
- Each class received a set of the 6 books from their category.
- The teacher librarian led the discussions about each book and teachers used the 4 discussion questions/techniques used in SJ.
- Each class made at least 1 creative response that was shared on the SJ website.
- Sean E Avery of ‘Frank’s Red Hat’(who zoomed in from WA) was one of the chosen creatives, and he spoke of his background, writing and illustrations.
- Mandy Foot, SA author and illustrator, visited each class and spoke of how she created the illustrations to accompany Katrina Germein’s text to ‘Bev and Kev’.
- Katrina Germein also spoke to each of the SJ groups about how she created the text to ‘Bev and Kev’.
- All class library books and author/illustrator visits were paid by the Shadow Judging budget of $2500.
- Each group then voted on their winner in their category and this was added to the national database ready for the SJ announcement on August 23rd .
- There was strong student engagement in SJ and teachers commented on the depth of their understanding of the texts.
